Guardians of the Cedars
ideology | founder

A Maronite political movement and militia formed in 1969 which played a significant role in the Lebanese Front. A group of men has been meeting to form a political gathering with the task of standing up against the new invasion of Lebanon. The group included the present leader of the party, Mr. Etienne Sakr, and the great poet and philosopher Said Akl who draw the ideological framework of the gathering. Although the gathering was licensed under the name Lebanese Renovation Party, it could not come out publicly, due to reasons difficult to explain now, nevertheless, the leader of the party continued his way and started to assemble the young Lebanese to defend Lebanon and train them on how to use arms. They formed a genuine resistance nucleus to start with the defense. The streets of Beirut witnessed for the first time graffiti on the walls that stated "no for the Arabs", "no for the Syrians" and "no Palestinians will remain on the Lebanese territory". These carried the signature GoCF, Guardians of the Cedars Front.
The ideological framework was based on three principles:
1-The nature of the Lebanese war and that it is a war between strangers and the Lebanese.
2-Identifying the true enemies of Lebanon. They are the Syrians, the Palestinians and the rest of the Arab regimes.
3 -The essence of the Lebanese cause, which the fighters are fighting for.
The motto of the Guardians of the Cedars came to light: The Word was married to the Gun and it gave birth to the Guardians of the Cedars. Named after Lebanon's national symbol, it consisted of about 500 men and fought as part of the Lebanese Front.
Despite its relatively small size its militia fought very aggressively and was involved in some of the heaviest engagements of the war including the battles of  Tal el-Zaatar, Jisr el-Basha, Nabaa and Qarantina Palestinian camps. The Guardians with a motto of  'Until no Palestinian remains on Lebanese soil' were greatly feared by the Palestinians. In 1978 as part of the Lebanese Front they battled the Syrian army in Beirut and again in 1981 in the Battle od Zahle. In 1985 The Guardians of the Cedars mounted a fierce defense of Kfar-Fallus and Jezzine.
1989 saw them once more fighting the Syrians this time along side the Lebanese Army as the Guardians strongly supported the Lebanese government of General Michel Aoun.
The Guardians are currently based in Jezzine.
